SC366 Properties of Matter

IMPORTANT:  Few handouts will be distributed in class; students are responsible to visit the course page for  PoM on Mastering Chemistry for class and lab handouts. The course syllabus, and each quarter's assignment sheets are available at the bottom of this page.

Properties of Matter prepares students to understand the structure and properties of matter.  At the conclusion of the course students will be able to:

·         Use scientific measurement and dimensional analysis to interpret data

·         Identify subatomic structure of atoms

·         Systematically name compounds and write chemical formulas

·         Write and balance chemical equations

·         Predict and classify chemical reactions

·         Use stoichiometry to determine amounts of substances in chemical reactions

·         Determine the energy associated with chemical reactions

·         Use the periodic table to predict properties of elements and compounds

·         Distinguish and predict bonding of atoms and molecular shapes

Tentative schedule of topics:

Unit 1: Matter & Measurement (Ch 1 & 2)

Unit 2: Stoichiometry (Ch 3)

Unit 3: Chemical Reactions (Ch 4)

Unit 4: Thermochemistry (Ch 5)

Unit 5: Periodic Table (Ch 6 & 7)

Unit 6: Bonding & Geometry (Ch 8 & 9)
